Matches use published on-screen colours and CIEDE2000 colour difference. Real floss has sheen and dye-lot variation, so check skeins in daylight.
How colour matching works
- 1
Choose a colour
Use the colour picker, type a hex code such as #c8102e, or tap one of the starting colours.
- 2
Or pick from a photo
Upload a photo and click the spot you want. The tool averages a few pixels so one noisy pixel does not throw the match. Your photo stays on your device.
- 3
Compare matches
Results are ranked by CIEDE2000 colour difference, the measure that best follows how people see colour.
- 4
Check the real thread
Thread is shiny and textured, so it reads slightly different from flat screen colour. Confirm with a skein in daylight.

Questions
- How do I find the DMC colour of a photo?
- Upload the photo above and click the area you want. For a whole picture, use the PIXVIX photo to pattern converter: it matches every colour and builds a chart.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. The photo is read in your browser to sample the colour and is never sent to our server.
- What hex codes do DMC threads have?
- Each match shows the on-screen hex value used in the DMC colour chart. These are approximations of dyed thread, which is why every result shows a match score instead of claiming an exact hex.
- Why does the closest match still look different?
- Some colours, such as very bright neons, have no close thread in a brand. A match marked Rough means there is nothing nearer in that range; try another brand or a blend of two strands.
