Thread palette maker
Turn a photo into a floss palette, or build one by number. Get the closest thread for every colour, compare up to five brands side by side and download the list.
Photo
Your palette (0)
Upload a photo or add a thread number to start your palette.
Matches use published on-screen colours and CIEDE2000 colour difference. Dots show match quality: gold is a chart match, green near-identical, teal close, amber similar.
How the palette maker works
- 1
Upload a photo
The tool finds the main colours with k-means clustering in a perceptual colour space, then matches each to the nearest thread.
- 2
Choose how many
Slide between 3 and 24 colours. Fewer colours give a bolder palette; more keep subtle shading.
- 3
Add or remove threads
Type any number to add it, or remove colours you do not want. Switch the base brand at any time.
- 4
Compare and export
See equivalents in up to five brands, then copy the list or download a CSV for your shopping list.
Turn any photo into a pattern
Real DMC colours, symbols, a thread list with skeins and a printable PDF.
Questions
- How do I get DMC colours from a photo?
- Upload the photo above. The palette maker groups similar pixels and matches each group to the closest DMC floss, with the share of the picture each colour covers.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The photo is processed in your browser and never sent to our server.
- Can I make a full pattern from the palette?
- Yes. The PIXVIX pattern maker turns the whole photo into a chart with symbols, a thread list and a printable PDF.
- Why do two clusters become one thread?
- When two picture colours are closest to the same floss they merge into one row, and their shares are added together.
