How to sell cross stitch patterns on Etsy
Updated November 1, 2026 · 3 min read
You can sell charts you designed, including charts made from photos and artwork you have the rights to. You cannot sell a chart because a converter ran on someone else’s picture. This is practical publishing advice, not legal advice. Copyright rules differ by country. In the United States, copyright exists when an original work is fixed in a file or on paper. Registration is extra.

Start from work you can stand behind
Your own drawing, your own photo, or something that is genuinely in the public domain. Not a film still, not a sports logo, not another designer’s chart traced over, not a stranger’s Instagram photo. Etsy tells sellers they are responsible for having the rights to what they list. The cross stitch community is small enough that a copied chart gets recognised.

Chart it, then remove the confetti you would not stitch
Use a stitch count a buyer can finish, and a colour count they can buy. Many patterns that sell well sit around 10 to 30 colours. Isolated single stitches are slow. Clean them while you are the designer, not after the reviews arrive.
Clean the chart before it is a listing. - 3
Put these pages in the PDF
A symbol chart with bold lines every ten stitches and a little overlap between pages. A key with the DMC number, the name, the symbol, and the stitch count for each colour. The stitch count in stitches, the fabric count you designed for (14-count Aida is the safe default), and the finished size. A picture of the stitched piece or an honest mockup. A line that says the chart is for personal stitching.
Grid, key with counts, preview. - 4
Use a commercial licence for charts you will sell
In PixVix, Personal credits are for patterns you make for yourself. Business credits add commercial selling rights and branded PDFs for patterns created with those credits. Business status does not rewrite older Personal patterns. You still have to own or license the source image. The credit is not a copyright assignment from the photographer you borrowed.

Write the listing for a stitcher, not for a search engine only
Say the stitch count, the finished size on 14-count, the number of colours, and whether the PDF is a digital download. Use your own mockups. A title stuffed with unrelated holidays does not make a chart easier to stitch.

Keep a folder that proves you made it
Save the source photo or sketch, the working chart, the exported PDF, and the listing images with dates. Put a copyright line on the PDF with your name and the year. In the US you do not have to register to own the copyright. Registration helps if you later need to enforce it. Etsy’s help page says the same about registration being optional and useful.
Selling a finished stitch is a separate question
Buying someone else’s pattern usually buys the right to stitch it, not the right to republish the PDF. Whether you may sell the finished object depends on that designer’s terms, and on any trademark in the picture (a character, a team, a logo). If the pattern does not say, treat it as personal use. Your own original design is yours to stitch and, if you want, to sell as an object too.
What PixVix does not do
It does not clear a photo you do not own. It does not file a copyright registration. It does not guarantee a particular Etsy ranking. It makes the chart, the branded PDF, and the listing draft when you are on Business credits and you had the right to the art.

Build the PDF you would want to buy
Chart it, count the stitches, and export a keyed PDF. Use Business credits if the file is for sale.

- Can I sell a pattern made from a photo I took?
- Yes, if you took it or you have a licence that allows this kind of derivative, and you create the chart with a commercial licence. Personal-use credits are for stitching yourself.
- Can I sell a Disney or team-logo chart?
- Not without a licence from the rights holder. A converter does not create that licence.
- Do I have to register a copyright before I list on Etsy?
- In the United States, no. Protection starts when the original chart is saved or printed. Registration is a separate step if you want the extra enforcement tools. Other countries differ. This is not legal advice.
- What do buyers complain about?
- Missing stitch counts, no overlap on multi-page charts, symbols that look identical, and confetti nobody would enjoy stitching. Fix those before the listing goes up.
